How Do I Stop My Acid Reflux?

By Spa guru | November 25, 2009

For those of us suffering from acid reflux, eating may not give enjoyment, more so if you are not sure what foods actually cause your acid reflux, or what foods you should be eating to help reduce the effects of the digestive juices in the esophagus. Now, on the whole spicy foods cause the pain and discomfort of acid reflux , but there are other foods that cause heartburn at fault. Since tomato based foods can cause an acid reflux problem, foods like pizza get a double hit because greasy foods are often the culprit as well. Pasta dishes that have tomato sauce in them cause a lot of problems for folks that suffer from acid reflux, but the only thing you need to do is to try each food to see how it affects your stomach. If after you’ve eaten an orange you get a lot of acid reflux, then cut back on the number of oranges you eat for a while.

Now there are some foods that do help acid reflux, and they are thought to be health foods anyway. Garlic helps some sufferers, although I have seen that garlic causes reflux in others. What you Have to do is make sure you eat a healthy diet, getting plenty of fibre enery day. Some say that a handful of almonds a day can assist digestion, although again, there are reports that some suffer with these too.

Now, if we look at problems sleeping, acid reflux can stop you from sleeping peacefully all night, but there are things you can try that can assist you. For a start, the acid reflux wedge pillow is designed for you to sleep on with your head always staying above your stomach, by keeping you more upright, whether you sleep on your back or your side. This stops the digestive juices from going back up the esophagus. These specially designed pillows are designed to raise your whole upper body, starting from the hip area, not just the neck and head. There are some small wedge pillows that just twist your neck in an effort to raise it, but these are not given any consideration. The gradual incline from waist to head works well from the many, many reports I’ve researched. Of course there are various things to watchout forfor a wedge pillow for acid reflux.

The pillows do not all come in the same width, and to benefit more fully, 24 inches, or the normal width of a pillow is at least what is needed, so that you move around on the wedge pillow without your head dropping off it. There are various depths of wedges, from a mere 2 inches up to 7 inches, and I think I’ve even seen some pillows than this. Most of the acid reflux wedge pillows are suitable for you to use your own normal pillow on top of it, and generally speaking, these are full length wedge pillows about 30-32 inches from hips to the top of the head. Before you purchase, make sure you consider very carefully so you can be sure it will suit your purpose.

So, there are just a few of the methods to reduce acid reflux, but another easy thing to do is to make your meals smaller, but eat more often. By doing this your stomach doesn’t have to digest as much at the same time, your stomach isn’t as full so there is reduced to force it out of the stomach and back up the esophagus. Consider these suggestions some consideration to see if you can reduce some of the acid reflux medication you are presently taking.
