TAKE LEAVE, DON’T LEAVE IT
By Spa guru | November 26, 2009
Even though they have a huge range of holiday destinations within a stone’s throw, a third of Australians in fulltime employment won’t take a day’s leave this year
According to a study done by Tourism Australia, nearly 60% of full-time Australian workers don’t utilise their 4 weeks’ annual leave entitlement. Many of them have eight weeks or more accrued leave.
The findings also determined that Australians work the longest hours in the developed world.
Shorter, weekend getaways have become increasingly popular at the expense of the traditional month-long seaside family holiday. The tourism market has also been affected by the global financial crisis.Whilst some people are content to only take a couple of days away, health experts don’t always agree that that is sufficient.
Experts agree that people who take their health seriously should take holiday time seriously too.A study on over 12 000 men (between 35 and 57 years’ old) who had participated in a heart disease prevention trial done by the State University of New York, found that those who took an annual holiday reduced their overall risk of death by around 20%.Taking an annual holiday can also reduce their risk of death from heart disease by up to 30%.
With world-class destinations on their doorstep, Australians have no excuse to skip on holidays. In WA, where the diversity of attractions and great accommodation in Margaret River are only a couple of hours’ drive away, there is something to lift the spirits of even the most exhausted holidaymaker.Breathtaking beaches, cliffs, caves and coastline combined with award-winning wineries, restaurants, shops, activities and quality accommodation in Margaret River make it the perfect holiday destination.
Experts agree that regular holidays are necessary to maintain a healthy, balanced life.According to a study done in 2005 by the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin, women who didn’t take regular breaks were 2 to 3 times more likely to be depressed than those who took regular holidays.
Skipping holidays seems to be a national past-time in Australia.Corporate men (between the ages of 35 – 49) have accumulated the most leave, and half have kids under 12.
There’s much more to life than work, say Seaside Holiday Home Accommodation, an agency specialising in self-catering holiday homes in Margaret River which has over 60 homes on its books.”Adults need holidays just as much as kids do, in order to bond together, communicate, relax and recharge.Renting a holiday home in Margaret River is an ideal way for families to enjoy time together in a peaceful environment, so that everyone gets the healthy benefits from a good holiday.”
