Teeth Whiteners in the Market Today
By Spa guru | March 15, 2010
There’s no doubt that teeth whitening is the latest big thing when it comes to people getting cosmetic work done. Part of the reason this procedure has become so popular is that people are looking to improve their appearance to try to get ahead in the business world. It’s hard to accept, in this appearance-conscious society, that apart from routine staining from certain kinds of food and drink, one’s teeth simply do get darker, quite naturally, as they age. So a great many people have resorted to some kind of tooth whitener to lighten the color of their teeth as much as possible.
There are several methods used to whiten teeth, some handled in a professional setting like a dentist’s office, and others that can be done less expensively at home. Anyone who watches television will be familiar with the most publicized method, which involves using strips across the front teeth for short periods of time. Other methods involve trays in which whitening gel is placed, which are then set over the teeth. Most of these strips and gels contain types of peroxide, which bleaches stains out of the enamel and sometimes even penetrates the dentin underneath to bleach it as well.
Methods of teeth whitening used in a dentist’s office are not only somewhat more expensive, but also require more careful use. Dentists will employ the regular methods such as gels, but they may also have access to lasers that can speed up the bleaching process. If whitening doesn’t appear to occur successfully by the usual means though, dentists can also bond a veneer onto the front of teeth, made of a composite material, which doesn’t actually change the underlying color but produces the appearance of white teeth.
What should be kept in mind, however, is that people themselves can do a lot to help prevent their teeth going dark in the first place, so teeth whitening may be less necessary. There’s no question that certain kinds of food and drink, not to mention smoking, will stain otherwise perfectly white teeth. And the color of both the enamel and the underlying dentin can be affected by eating in an unhealthy way and not getting the right minerals in one’s diet. Healthy eating may be the least expensive method of all to whiten one’s teeth.
