What do you do when you’ve planned you’re trip to Australia and your car breaks down or you mistakenly wander off from the group in the bush? No Problem, keep reading and be prepared. You should be aware: It is generally recommended, you have at least a small amount of experiance in survival medicine before leaving on any wilderness adventure. You don’t have to scour the best survival guides, we’ve done it for you. We’ve compiled a list of the top ten bush survival tips and techniques, straight from the experts who’ve been there, done it and used the T-shirt to store water!
1. Be Prepared
Before you even leave for a harsh environment, you have to expect the unexpected. You might enrol on a basic survival course before your trip, a good idea according to thesurvivalexpert.
2. Packing
Preparing for survival is bringing the right tools with you. A water bottle and filter, a sturdy knife, a small mirror, a compass, matches and flint, prophylactics and a first aid kit. Though the knife itself will be less durable according to John Wiseman, author of the SAS Survival Guide, some knives have hollow handles which contain many of these accessories.
3. Travel Light
If you travel light, you will be speedier should you have to move. Making informed choices is important when it comes to selecting what you take with you and don’t. If you leave something, you’ll waste vital time and energy going back for it.
4. Don’t Panic
You should see this as a critical part of your survival. You will be in a position to remain collected or at least calmer than others who may be stranded with you, Provided you have followed the previous three steps.
5. Water
As The SAS Survival Guide says, we can survive for three weeks without food but only for three days without water. This is the time to use the flask bottle and condoms you brought with you. Don’t breathe through your mouth, don’t smoke or drink alcohol as these all use up vital fluids.
6. Eating
Protein can best be found in meat and you’ll need it if you select to move. Prior information on the local animal and plant life can increase your chances of survival so it might be a neat idea to do some research before leaving for the bush. In the bush, you’ll most likely find yourself eating insects and cutting leftover meat from wild carcasses. You have to make sure meat is fresh by looking at the color of the bones and whether or not there are any vultures nearby, according to Bear Grylls. If the bones have been bleached by the sun or the meat smells off, keep moving. If it’s fresh, have it as it is as there’ll be more protein in it.
7. Fire
You should make a fire to keep you warm after sunset, use matches or flint and a striker if you can access them. Try using Old Man’s Beard or another brushwood for tinder. 8. Shelter
Finding shelter is important, particularly from the midday sun. Some places in the bush will be completely exposed to the sun and won’t have any cover, so you’ll have to try to make some using plants and whatever cloth you can spare. Boost your mood by finding shelter from the sun and later, from the wind and cold.
9. Signals
This is why you have that mirror. Reflected in the right direction, the very hot bush sun can allow you to signal for help, keeping you alive. Without a mirror, you can make smoke signals by covering your fire in live or ‘wet’ branches as this will create a lot of smoke.
10. Moving
If you’re not going, you’ll need to be sure of you’re water supply and keep the camp running. Stay out of the sun as much as possible and be sure of you’re direction if you’re moving and you’ll definitely have to have plenty of water. For this reason, you brought your compass! Being confident can keep you alive and can help you avoid panic.
