What is Body Contouring?

By Spa guru | December 7, 2009

Most people know about the popular kinds of cosmetic surgery that target the facial features.  However, cosmetic surgery for the body is an equally important field, which goes beyond just breast augmentation.  We know that people are concerned about their overall appearance, and this means that any ugly or unusual aspect of an individual’s appearance, whether it’s on the face or anywhere else visible, can have detrimental consequences.  For some people, the only realistic or effective option for dealing with these issues is cosmetic surgery.  Most cosmetic surgical procedures for the body are referred to collectively as “body contouring”.  These procedures seek to alter the contours of the body, usually by removing extra fat or skin and/or lifting the remaining tissues.

The most common body contouring operation is liposuction”.  In liposuction, a surgical tube device called a cannula and a suction device called an aspirator are used to extract fat.  A small incision is made in the area in question, and liquid is added to the area to balance out the amount of fat being extracted.  Liposuction is so popular because it is a reliable way of addressing a problem that many people experience.  It does not function as a weight-loss tactic, because the actual amount of fat removed is quite small; liposuction is actually only used as a method for getting rid of fat from specific problem areas, and is only appropriate for healthy individuals who have tried diet and exercise.  Among these areas are the midsection, the legs, below the chin, and the love handles.  Recently, more refined liposuction methods such as Liposculpture and SmartLipo have been developed, which target more specific areas and involve even fewer drawbacks.

The abdominoplasty, also known as the “tummy tuck,” is another popular body contouring procedure.  This operation is intended to tighten loose skin and excise tissues causing the appearance of looseness from the abdomen, a problem which is especially prevalent with individuals who have undergone significant weight loss, and women who have experienced pregnancy.  Incisions are made in different areas according to the extensiveness of the operation.  Occasionally, the operation may be completed with the use of just one incision.  The belly button can also be raised as part of the abdominoplasty procedure if necessary.

Body lifts are also considered body contouring operations.  Thigh lifts and buttock lifts are two of the more common procedures in this group.  Buttock lifts and thigh lifts are similar in the sense that, in both cases, excess tissues are removed and the remaining tissues are tightened in the target areas.  They aim at a rejuvenated, fitter-looking appearance to the area.  An abdominoplasty may also be added to a thigh lift and buttock lift, resulting in what is known as the lower body lift.  Conversely, the upper body lift combines the upper arm lift, which addresses the “batwing” deformity that affects many women, and the breast lift, which, perhaps not surprisingly, sees the breasts lifted.  Upper and lower body lifts may be performed together, resulting in a “full body lift,” which is one of the most drastic cosmetic surgical procedures currently being performed.

The body contouring category also includes certain types of implants, including buttock implants and calf implants.  Buttock implants aim to increase the volume of the buttock area, and also result in a firmer look and sensation.  Calf implants may also be used to deal with genetic issues which lead to a reduction in the muscle tone of the legs, or can simply be added for aesthetic reasons.  This is an operation very common among bodybuilders, because the calves can be challenging to develop fully even when the “correct” training regimen is used.

Surgical procedures of any sort always involve certain risks, as well as the necessity of significant recovery time.  Please consult with a surgeon to determine if any of these operations is right for you.
